My computer has been struck with a virus (I apparently make poor clicking choices when I am sleep deprived!) that has made it impossible for me to access my web browser, so I haven't been able to provide an update. I decided to comandeer Zak's computer for a spell so I could provide a few details for The People.
Tuesday Dr. Jen stopped by the house for both of our one day check. Since we weren't at the birth center for very long she had me take both our temperatures several times in the first 24 hours and she did a head to toe on Caspian to make sure all systems were working properly.
Friday she came back to the house for our four day appointment. To this appointment she brought her scale and weighed Caspian. He had lost two ounces. I was a little concerned about this since Koa never lost any weight--he just went from big to bigger. Then she told me there was no call for alarm unless he lost more than 14 ounces (10% of his birth weight). So he was doing well!
Our next appointment will be on Monday and we will go back to the clinic to see Jen and also, we will see Dr. Ed for Caspian's circumcision.
As far as everything else goes, Caspian is doing well and growing right before our eyes. He's already starting to grow out of his newborn outfits and filling out his 0-3 month outfits (Can someone tell me why those are two different sizes?) He's sleeping pretty well most days but often sleeps better during the day than at night. I have a suspicion that he is very sensitive to body temperature. He doesn't seem to like to be even one degree too hot or too cold, but will sleep like a champ on a perfect three hour cycle as long as he is the perfect temp. However, if he is just a little hot or cold he wakes up exactly on a two hour cycle, but won't really eat very well when he is waking up that often. So, I am working to figure out just the right combination of clothes and blankets to suit his fancy for different times of the day.
He's a very sweet little baby and we are enjoying getting to know him. He is starting to spend more and more time awake which makes him more fun to everyone involved. Koa is pretty smitten with him. He loves to hold him any chance he gets and usually says, "Brudders!" while he's holding him.
One other thing I have been tracking just out of curiosity is just how good of a weight loss program having a baby is. When I had Koa I wanted to weigh myself right after I had him just to see how much you lose that first day, but the people at the hospital thought I was out of my mind and wouldn't let me near a scale. At that time we didn't own a scale at home, so my curiosity went unsatisfied. So, this time I thought I would track it. By the last time they weighed me at the clinic, I had gained 33 pounds. The first day I lost 12 pounds. By day four I had lost 17. At one week I was 22 pounds lighter! So, now I pose this question to you: If I could design a weight loss program that was as difficult as giving birth, but provided the same type of results, do you think people would do it?
