When we found out we were leaving Hawai'i last year I distinctly remember a conversation when Zak and I were driving along and he asked me, "What are you going to miss most about Hawai'i." I burst into tears and said, "Lilikoi season..." Now, you have to remember that I was also seven months pregnant at the time...cut me some slack. I had just recently come to appreciate lilikoi so I was sad to miss out on getting to pick my own and make yummy things out of them.
A little later in the same conversation he asked me what I was most looking forward to about Portland. I responded with, "Apples! And peaches. And strawberries. And blueberries. There are these farms where you can go and pick your own fruit...." Now, remember I was seven months pregnant...no, that doesn't really change anything. It's still one of my favorite things about Portland. I do love to eat and there are lots of good things to eat here!
A couple of weeks ago we went here and picked 25 pounds of strawberries! We made jam and fruit leather and froze 5 gallons of them to have for the rest of the year!!
Today Wes and Jessi joined us and we all went here to pick raspberries and blueberries (the cherries were too high to reach!) and came home with 11 pounds of blueberries and 24 pounds of raspberries! Now we will have plenty of berries for the rest of the year at a fraction of the price we would pay for them in the store.
Tonight I spent some time freezing some of the raspberries and then making some fruit snacks for our upcoming trip! More to come on that very soon...
